“Space X has its own vision”: the Ministry of Digital Development explained why Starlink in Ukraine is more expensive than in Europe

The price of Starlink satellite Internet terminals from Space X in Ukraine is more expensive, and you need to pay for the use all the time, since there is a higher usage traffic in Ukraine. Yury Matsik, Director of the Fixed Internet Development Department of the Ministry of Digital Development, told about this in an interview with EP. He said that according to Elon Musk, 25,300 terminals were transferred to Ukraine, of which more than 22,000 were received at the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Development. The Ministry of Digital Transformation is also negotiating about another 10,000 starlinks – they are already at the station discussing the method of importing equipment into the country. Matsik added that the Ministry of Digital Development does not divide the total number of terminals into military and civilian needs and provides critical infrastructure with equipment and is freed from the Russian occupiers of the city. In Ukraine, stations are twice as expensive as in Poland, and you need to pay for the use all the time, and in those imported from abroad, payment is made only for the month when the client uses it. Macik explains such a difference in approach to tariffs and costs only by the vision of Space X. The company categorically did not like the situation when terminals intended for private use were attached to mobile towers. In the Chernihiv region, Internet was distributed to five villages with one Starlink, because the main channel was cut off. The company sees the traffic passing through the terminal. She sees how much one of the most active users in the world consumes, and we have many times more,” explained the director of one of the departments of the Ministry of Digital Development. He noted that in any business there is a difference between the cost of services to a private person and business. For example, in a village, connecting a client to a fixed-line Internet costs 200-400 hryvnias, and a business subscriber in the same village costs five to ten times more. Even at the beginning of the war, Musk stated that Starlink was intended for private use. For commercial use, prices are four to five times higher,” Macik recalled.
